When our family made the decision to purchase a dog, we researched breeds for nearly two years as a means to making sure that our decision was made from the most informed perspective. Our selection criteria were extremely demanding, covering factors like intelligence, trainability, energy, socialization, and (most importantly for us at the time) suitability for a family including young children. And in the end, only the standard poodle met our very rigid guidelines (with the breed's being one of only a handful of non-shedding dogs a distinct bonus).
When it came time to make our purchase, we sought out a reputable breeder who would understand and appreciate the process by which we'd come to our decision, and our willingness as a family to take on the task of raising a standard poodle. We found Judy Johnston of Khalsa Permanent Reg'd. Kennel in Williams Lake, B.C., who rewarded our interest with her own favorite puppy from her kennel's most recent litter.
Danté Teddy Chia (his names needed to be carefully selected and formally voted on by the family, and has been known to raise a few eyebrows in show circles) is a happy and energetic dog, still a puppy well into his adult years. Whether he's playing with the kids, walking in the park, or chasing through the bushes in our back yard with his constant companion Béatrice, Danté's tail is always wagging. Like all standard poodles, Danté is a wonderful family dog, very well adjusted and patient. He manages to match the energy levels of the children in the family without ever overwhelming them physically, and enjoys running, fetching, and playing a mean defense in backyard soccer games.
Danté's favorite activities are retrieving virtually anything a person can throw, playing tug-of-war with a sturdy rope, and doing standing jumps on command that can easily take him seven feet into the air. An amazingly thoughtful and intelligent dog, Danté will watch at the windows for hours on end, and will let you know without apology when it's time for you to pay attention to him (usually with a paw dropped into your lap and a 'pet me now' look).
